Banjul, 10 October 2023: Emilia Siwingwa has joined the Institute for Human Rights and Development in Africa (IHRDA) as Executive Director.

Emilia, who hails from Tanzania, holds an LLM in International Trade Law and Contracts from the University of Turin, Italy. She is an Advocate of the High Court of Tanzania with over 20 years of experience in human rights, good governance and democratization, sustainable and international development, as well as organizational management at regional and international levels.

At assumption of duties, Emilia said, “I am delighted to be part of the IHRDA team, and to contribute to the commendable work the organization is doing across Africa to promote human rights and development. I look forward to working with our team of seasoned professionals, so that together we can ensure that our human rights and development mandate continues to be meaningful to all Africans.”

Emilia is a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation, an Archbishop Desmond Tutu Fellow of the African Leadership Institute, and a member of the Now Generation Network of the Mo Ibrahim Foundation. She has served on the Boards of several institutions and has also received national and international recognition for excellence in leadership and management.

Prior to joining IHRDA, Emilia founded and led an Africa-wide legal and development consulting practice based in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
