Banjul, 24 November 2021: About 25 lawyers and human rights defenders in Sierra Leone have agreed to constitute a pool of lawyers and human rights defenders for the promotion and protection of human rights in Sierra Leone.

In a workshop facilitated by IHRDA and Centre for Accountability and Rule of Law (CARL), 24 November 2021 in Freetown, Sierra Leone, the lawyers and human rights defenders agreed to constitute a pool with the name “HRD-Pool Sierra Leone”.

The mission of the pool is to “promote the respect for national, regional and international human rights standards in Sierra Leone through legal and advocacy actions at the national, regional and international levels”. The pool aims to position itself as a collective of lawyers and human rights defenders ready and available to help vulnerable people and victims of human rights violations in Sierra Leone. Pool members commit to work in synergy to monitor, document and report on the human rights situation in Sierra Leone, and offer victims of human rights violations legal assistance at domestic and supranational levels.

This activity falls within the framework of a project funded by National Endowment for Democracy (NED), USA, to build a legal environment for the protection of human rights and strengthen the use and effective of the African human rights system in Sierra Leone and Togo.
