Introduction

The Institute for Human Rights and Development in Africa (IHRDA) recognises that diversity, inclusion, equality and equity are integral to the realisation of human rights and central our work. Our commitment is reflected in our human rights protection work, including efforts to address and challenge gender and other discriminatory laws across all aspects of our operations. IHRDA is committed to fostering a workplace environment that is inclusive, supportive and free from discrimination and exploitation on the basis of gender, ethnicity, age, disability, sexual orientation, nationality or other status. This commitment is reflected in our organisational policies, manuals, strategies and operating protocols. We acknowledge that our policies impact individuals differently, and thus they must be tailored to be effective rather than gender-neutral.

Workplace Fairness and Equity Policy

IHRDA is committed to providing a fair and respectful work environment in which individuals are treated with dignity and equality. We promote equal opportunities in employment and prohibit discrimination or harassment on any grounds, including gender, age, disability, ethnicity, race, religion, sexual orientation or nationality. This commitment extends to all employment and human resources practices, including recruitment, training, and promotion, with reasonable accommodations for persons with disabilities and others requiring them. We emphasise a gender-responsive approach in organisational decision-making.

Gender Equality in Leadership and Governance

IHRDA values inclusive leadership as a means to advance its human rights mandate. Our Board of Directors, which includes strong female representation, plays a vital role in providing strategic direction and oversight. We believe that diverse perspectives enhance institutional effectiveness and accountability, and we are committed to merit-based governance structures that enhance inclusive participation.

Safeguarding, Protection and Duty of Care

IHRDA prioritises the dignity, safety, and well-being of all individuals we engage with, adopting a zero-tolerance policy towards sexual exploitation, abuse, and harassment. We are dedicated to safeguarding children and vulnerable adults, including persons with disabilities, through our dedicated policies. All staff members, consultants and contractors are required to familiarise themselves with our safeguarding policies, code of conduct, and prevention of sexual exploitation and harassment policies which have clear reporting mechanisms implemented to address breaches promptly. Retaliation against those raising safeguarding and protection concerns is strictly prohibited.
