CALL FOR APPLICATION - DEADLINE 31 MARCH 2010
IHRDA, with the support of the Open Society Initiative for West Africa (OSIWA), is operating a fund for individuals/groups litigating cases before the African Commission for Human and Peoples’ Rights. The fund covers travel, accommodation and other related expenses. Applicants to this fund must fulfill the following criteria:

Must be a national/organisation of an ECOWAS state, as well as Cameroon, Chad or Mauritania;

Must have a communication before the African Commission for Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACmHPR) [NB: cases before the ACmHPR are referred to as ‘communications’].
Applications should consist of the following:

An application letter;
-
Description of the communication including detailed information on the progress of your communication - approximately 800 words;

Evidence of nationality [e.g. copy of ID, NGO or company registration document].

HOUSING RIGHTS IN ABUJA (Yagba Tsav and 6 others v Minister of the FCTA & the FCDA - suit no. cv/437/08)
The 7 Plaintiffs in this case represent all the inhabitants of Tudun Wada village, a community in Lugbe, Abuja. They are suing the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) to prevent them from forcefully evicting them.
The Tudun Wada community has existed for over 20 years with the government’s full knowledge. They have built schools, hospitals churches, mosques, markets and other socio-economic infrastructure without government help. The government stationed bulldozers and riot police close by in readiness for eviction. The community made several appeals to the government to follow the due process of law to no avail. Consequently they resorted to the Federal High Court in Abuja to restrain the government. ...
